Puy-de-Dôme is a department in the center of France named after the famous dormant volcano, the Puy-de-Dôme. Puy-de-Dôme is one of the unique 83 subdivision formed in the French Revolution on March 4, 1790. The capital of the subdivision and the region is Clermont-Ferrand, a lively dynamic university town, home to the Michelin tyre and guidebook corporation.Puy-de-Dôme is part of the current region of Auvergne and is surrounded by the departments of Cantal, Loire, Haute-Loire, Allier, and Corrèzeand Creuse. The complete department has a wonderful and unspoilt nature as well as many monuments (castles, churches, etc) and museums which testify the rich past of this part of France .
