Loei is one of the most sparsely populated provinces (changwat) of Thailand, located on the north-east Thailand. Neighboring provinces (from east clockwise) Nong Khai, Udon Thani, Nongbua Lamphu, Khon Kaen, Phetchabun, Phitsanulok. The north it borders Xaignabouli province and Vientiane in Laos.

Loei is a city surrounded by mountain ranges whose summits are covered undulating hazy lines, abundant with various kinds of flora. Known them Phu Kradueng, Phu Luang and Phu Ruea.
The province is covered by low mountains, and the capital of Loei is situated in a fertile basin. Loei River, which flows through the province is a tributary of the Mekong River. This river forms the northern border region with neighboring Laos.

Although the temperature in the hot season around April may be greater than 40 degrees Celsius, the province is the only place in Thailand, who regularly drops below 0 degrees at night in the cold season around December.

The province has several mountains including Kradueng Fu, who is part of Phu Kradueng National Park. Other national parks of Phu Hin Rong KLA, Phu Rua, Phu Pha Man Phu Xuan, and Sai (also known as Na Haeo).
