Plagiarism in academic papers

Oxford dictionary describes plagiarism as 'a piece of writing that has been copied from someone else and is presented as being your own work'. This is a very general definition and expands to multiple dimensions including websites and published books. The definition of academic plagiarism is slightly different, student plagiarism is defined as:

  • Directly submitting work written by someone else.
  • Copying and pasting online sources.
  • Inability to properly cite the ideas or thoughts of others.

Plagiarism amongst students consists of Intentional plagiarism and Unintentional plagiarism.

Intentional plagiarism occurs when students know full well they are passing off someone else's words or ideas as their own. Purchasing pre-written research papers through the internet is arguably the most blatant form of intentional plagiarism.

Examples of intentional plagiarism include:

  • Buying pre-written papers.
  • Coping and pasting an article straight from the internet without paraphrasing or quoting source.
  • Fabricating a quotation or a source

Unintentional plagiarism occurs when students use the words and ideas of others but fail to properly quote a source or give credit, perhaps because they don't know how.

Examples of unintentional plagiarism include:

  • Quoting poorly by not using proper quotation marks.
  • Poor paraphrasing and changing a few words without changing the sentence structure.
  • Using inappropriate referencing format.

It depends on the instructor whether they judge an offense as intentional or unintentional plagiarism. Both these categories are different offence and carry different penalties for example; unintentional plagiarism may just lead to deduction in the students overall marks, while intentional plagiarism may lead to a student being forced to repeat the entire course.
