How to Document Electronic Sources

When you need to take some information from electronic sources to include in your thesis, essays, dissertations, research papers, term papers, lab reports, book reports etc, it is important that you cite the source properly.

To cite the electronic sources from where you take information for your academic paper, you should follow your chosen system in at least giving author, title, date, and as you are not able to provide the equivalent of publisher or page numbers, supply URL information.

With documenting electronic sources, you should provide as much extra information as you can to enable your reader recognize and find the item.

In case if you are documenting an electronic source that is ambiguous such as an email, you should include the sender’s address in the document. For online postings you are supposed to do the same. When dealing with ambiguous electronic sources, it is better to include the date you read that information to point out the version.

The style of documenting electronic sources is still in the process of being standardized, which means that, in some cases, you may be required to cobble together.
