While writing your dissertation, essay, thesis, term paper, research paper, book report and other writing projects.
Short Quotations:
When you need to quote something short, you have two options for it.
Brief introduction before the quotation.
Introduction of the quotation with a full sentence (demonstration of the significance of the passage in your argument)
Placing a colon at the end of the introductory sentence whenever a full sentence quotation is introduced is important as well as placing a comma after the introductory phrase whenever an incomplete sentence quotation is introduced. It is important here to mention that using a colon in spite of a comma is something that has been grammatically accepted.
Long Quotations:
When you decide to introduce a long quotation in your writing, it is better to introduce the quotation with a full sentence to make it possible for the readers to capture how the quotation fits into your argument. It is better not to place the quotation that is longer than four lines in quotation marks. As a replacement for, write it as a block quotation.
