To avoid cluttering your academic paper with quotations, summarizing and paraphrasing are used. Summarizing means extracting the most essential points of someone else’s written work while paraphrasing stands for writing someone else’s idea into your own language.
Both summarizing and paraphrasing are acceptable in the academic circle as long as you don’t overdo them. Use of either summarizing or paraphrasing is not merely a matter of choice. Instead, it depends upon the considerations of space.
Paraphrasing:
While paraphrasing, it is important to;
provide a reference
to change the structure of the sentence of the original text and to express the idea wholly in your own words
Summarizing
A summary is necessarily shorter than a paraphrase. Moreover, while summarizing, make sure that you only extract the essence of the original source.
