While writing you allow your thoughts to flow freely and although that helps you produce a creative essay, it gives you headache while editing. So it is advised to take one step at a time-focus on cohesion in sentences to improve overall organizational structure.

For starters, keep your sentences short and consistent in terms of flow of information. Follow this short, 3-step exercise for a coherent essay:

Finding:
Omitting the introductory phrases, underline the first few words of every sentence, and if possible, of clause as well.

Analysis:
Scrutinize the underlined words and detect consistency. Will your reader be able to see it too? Make sure every paragraph has one focus and you don’t deviate from it.

Amendment:
To avoid ambiguity, make the topics the subject of verbs and place it in the beginning with distracting opening phrases. It should not be a chore for the reader to detect the topic in each paragraph and the flow should not be jerky (due to ill-placed information).

In the end, your sentences make sense but the overall unity should also be tested for a reader-friendly final piece.
