Process and strategies of proofreading:

• Do not start proof reading immediately after you finish writing. Take some time off, ideally a day, before your start proof reading.
• Don’t allot last 10 minutes to proof reading. You need to give it time so make sure you have sufficient time before your deadline to proof read.
• Spelling and grammar checking software are not fool proof. A misspelled word, if valid otherwise, will not be corrected by the checker. Also, there are limited rules according to which they check your grammar and spelling, so make sure you pay close attention to both spelling and grammar while manual proof reading as well.
• Don’t start hunting for all the errors in one go. Look for spellings in the first attempt, punctuation in second, so on and so forth. This will allow you better focus and effective proof reading.
• Keep a track of errors hat you usually make and keep a special lookout for them.
• Segregate and read. You can either read one sentence at a time or read very slowly, pausing after every two to three words, to see if they sound correct.
• Highlight every punctuation mark and then assess them-are they correct, in terms of place and purpose?
• Remember that proof reading gets better with practice, and soon you will have a distinctive, systematic and focused way to do it-but it needs practice and patience.
