Recognizing the Most Common Errors:

The reason why many people dread proof reading is because they don’t know what exactly they are looking for. Although your mistakes will be different from what your class fellow usually makes, there are a few which are generally made by all writers. So while proof-reading, look out for each of them separately:

  • Spellings: inspect each word individually and in case of confusion, refer to a dictionary. Spell checkers do not detect every error so don’t rely on them completely. Also, keep a look out for missed or doubled words while checking for spellings.
  • Sentence construction: your every sentence should have the following elements essentially-subject, independent clause and complete verb. In case of more than one independent clause, use punctuations wisely to enhance clarity. Also, be consistent in terms of construction-don’t start with one and end with another.
  • Agreement in subject and verb: subject and verb should match each other in terms of number and meaning. Identify one and check with the other to avoid errors or correct one.
  • Parallelism: clarity is often hurdled due to lack of parallel forms in writing-e.g. being a good son involves good behavior, to be considerate and that you know how to take care of others; corrected form-being a good son involves behaving nicely, being considerate and caring for others.
  • Pronoun without noun: for every pronoun, try to find its relative noun. If you cannot find one, insert it. Besides that, make sure the connection between existing noun and pronoun is obvious and intelligible.
  • Punctuation: every one of them should make sense and serve a purpose. Apostrophes and commas are the most problematic areas so pay close attention to them.
