Detecting the Tone:

Effective writing needs a conscious decision about your choice of tone for it will decide the interest level of your target audience and also how clearly can you convey the message.

If you are reviewing your write up and evaluate the need to change the tone, first thing you need to decide is what kind of write up is it and what does it need in terms of tone. For example, if it is a scientific write up with lots of technical jargon, you should think twice before using personal or active tone. Not that you shouldn’t but while writing on something clinical, you are constrained in terms of opinion-expression.

Although subjective, it is generally concluded that active voice is better than passive for passive voice can cause your prose to seem flat and uninteresting. Furthermore, it elongates the sentence and confuses the reader-who might appreciate a rather direct approach.

To change tones, follow the simple procedure given below:

• Identify the passive tone. For example the usage of be, is, was, were, etc should assist you in detection.
• Next, recognize the noun and move it in the beginning of the sentence.
• Place the action verb directly after the noun
• Get rid of past tense references and rewrite the remaining sentence
  

For example:

Passive: Cambridge garden was visited by the children.
Active: Children visit the Cambridge garden.
